52 8055 remains in Switzerland

E-mail Print PDF

52 8055 is not (yet) going to Holland. Following recent railway accidents in Holland (September 2009 at Barendrecht) and Belgium (February 2010 near Brussels) the safety requirements have been tightened, subsequently requireing an upgrade of the track from Sneek to Stavoren, where the regular steam trains were planned for 2010. The start is now set for April 2011.

In view of the hire of 52 8055 to Holland, DLM has not planned any trips for 2010 so far. However, following the overwhelming success of the Hauenstein trips with 52 8055, a plan was made to modify another 52.80, so that 52 8055 could continue on the Hauenstein. Because we had promised the Dutch company to have a clean steam locomotive ready for their use, we had to keep 52 8055 ready in case the rebuilding of the other 52.80 would have been delayed.

We are currently planning further public daily trips on the Hauenstein line from July 31st to August 8th 2010.

Footplate Rides

E-mail Print PDF

Lokomotivführer bei der Arbeit

1. 52 8055

On all our public steam trains we offer the exclusive possibility for cab rides. You can see driver and fireman at work and feel the power and speed of the steam locomotive. To give many passengers a chance for a footplate ride, cab rides are done in sections of two station stops, usually lasting between 15 to 30 minutes. If you book early, you may choose your preferred section. Thanks to the light oil firing, our cab is clean and there is no need for special clothing. For safety reasons it is not allowed to speak to driver and fireman whilst the train is in motion, but a represetative from DLM will give you explanations and answer questions.

A ticket, a voucher worth 100.- CHF (Swiss Francs) and a reservation are necessary. Voucher can be purchased in our Shop, or ordered together with the reservation at DLM by mail or phone.

2. Brienz-Rothorn Bahn

This spectacular mountain railway offers cab rides too. The Brienz-Rothorn Railway is the only one worldwide to have three generations of steam locomotives in regular service (locomotives built in 1891/92, 1933/36 and 1992/96). The line has gradients of 1 in 4 almost throughout the scenic line which adds to the general attractiveness of the cab rides. For details see pamphlet.
