Footplate Rides
Saturday, 11 July 2009 17:25

1. 52 8055
On all our public steam trains we offer the exclusive possibility for cab rides. You can see driver and fireman at work and feel the power and speed of the steam locomotive. To give many passengers a chance for a footplate ride, cab rides are done in sections of two station stops, usually lasting between 15 to 30 minutes. If you book early, you may choose your preferred section. Thanks to the light oil firing, our cab is clean and there is no need for special clothing. For safety reasons it is not allowed to speak to driver and fireman whilst the train is in motion, but a represetative from DLM will give you explanations and answer questions.
A ticket, a voucher worth 100.- CHF (Swiss Francs) and a reservation are necessary. Voucher can be purchased in our Shop, or ordered together with the reservation at DLM by mail or phone.
2. Brienz-Rothorn Bahn
This spectacular mountain railway offers cab rides too. The Brienz-Rothorn Railway is the only one worldwide to have three generations of steam locomotives in regular service (locomotives built in 1891/92, 1933/36 and 1992/96). The line has gradients of 1 in 4 almost throughout the scenic line which adds to the general attractiveness of the cab rides. For details see pamphlet.

August 12, 2017: Hauling the El Achai Peace Train over the old Hauenstein Line
Tuesday, 12 September 2017 12:57
The organizers replaced the bright yellow stripe by a golden one to match their carriages. On Saturday, August 12, 52 8055 run light engine along the river Rhine from Schaffhausen to Sissach, from where it hauled the El Achai peace train over the old, steep Hauenstein line to Olten, continuing to Oensingen. The old Ed 2 x 2/2-Mallet locomotive took the train to Balsthal. After lunch the guests had been hauld back to Sissach likewise. 52 8055 spent the night at Sissach to be shown at the local festivities the next day. The return journey to Schaffhausen was light engine again.

52 8055 and the happy passengers of the El Achai peace train arrive at Läufelfingen, top station of the old Hauenstein line with gradients of 21 and 26%o. Photo: Georg Trüb
The following promotion film for the peace train shows some spectacular sequences of 52 8055 (5 minutes):

21. Mai 2017: Schaffhausen - Bülach - Winterthur - Romanshorn - Etzwilen - Winterthur - Schaffhausen
Monday, 05 June 2017 11:23
Early on Sunday 21st May 2017, 52 8055 worked light engine to Etzwilen, to haul an Orient-Express- and a Teakbar-carriage back to Schaffhausen. In the mean time, 01 519 of the Eisenbahnfreunde Zollernbahn EFZ e.V. hauled a special from Rottweil to Schaffhausen, where the trains were combined. Whilst 01 519 took a rest, 52 8055 pulled the train via Bülach to Winterthur. The passengers from Rottweil took the opportunity to visit the steam centre (Dampfzentrum Winterthur). 52 8055 steamed with new passengers to Romanshorn. After a break of two hours the train continued its journey along the scenic Lake of Constance back to Winterthur and Schaffhausen. 01 519 brought its train back to Rottweil, while 52 8055 returned the luxury carriages to Etzwilen.
