The first locomotives built to the principles of modern steam were rack steam locomotives. In 1992, SLM delivered three prototypes of these entirely new developed steam locomotives to the Brienz Rothorn Railway, to the (electrified) Montreux - Glion - Rochers-de-Naye and to the Austrian Federal Railways for their Schneeberg- and Schafberg-line. Thanks to the outstanding performance, five series locomotives were delivered in 1996, three for the Schafberg-line and two for the Brienz Rothorn Railway.
The advantages of the new steam technology are described in the chapter modern steam.
